At least five people were killed this morning when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a mosque in Maiduguri, a militia member assisting the military against Boko Haram jihadists said. The leader of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Ajiri Yala, some 15 kilometres (10 miles) north of Maiduguri, said the attack happened at about 4:30 am. “A male suicide bomber disguised as a worshipper entered the mosque while people were gathering for the morning prayers,” he told AFP by telephone. “He detonated his explosives. He killed five people and injured several others.” Boko Haram typically never claims responsibility but has used suicide bombing as a frequent tactic in its eight-year insurgency to establish a hard line Islamic state. Their end is closer than they think.

What appears to be, perhaps the longest elusive academic jinx in Nigeria was recently broken by Ozibo Ekele, a 2016 graduate of the famed Ibadan School of History (Department of History), Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan, where he finished top of the Faculty and Department with a B.A. (First Class Honours) and a CGPA of 6.6 out of a possible 7.0. By this feat, he became the first person to graduate with First Class Honours in the 69-year-old Department. Ozibo who is also a 2013 Mass Communication graduate of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, is therefore expected to cart away several academic Prizes in the forthcoming 2017 Convocation ceremony of the University of Ibadan. A 22-year-old lady, identified as Tina Rebecca Sunday, is being held by the police in Enugu for killing her uncle, one Friday Mathew. The incident occurred in the Independence Layout area of Enugu on Thursday, October 26, 2017. It was gathered that the lady, Tina, a native of Ikot Udobang Ukanafon, in Akwa Ibom State, lived with the now deceased uncle in Ezilo Street, Independence Layout, Enugu. It was further gathered that Tina was arrested by operatives of the New Haven police station, Enugu, while attempting to escape, after committing the crime. But the lady, in her confessional statement, has described the killing as accidental. Tina disclosed that she killed Mathew, a 48-year-old man, while struggling to escape his attempt to have forceful carnal knowledge of her. Burundi is becoming the first country to withdraw from the International Criminal Court. An ICC spokesperson confirmed that the pullout takes effect on Friday, a year after the East African nation notified the United Nations secretary-general of its intention to leave the court that prosecutes the world's worst atrocities. Burundi is the only one of three African nations to go ahead with its withdrawal after making moves last year to leave amid accusations that the court focuses too much on the continent.

A former judge who led Guatemala's football federation has become the first person sentenced in the U.S. in the FIFA world football corruption scandal, getting eight months in prison. Hector Trujillo, 63, was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Brooklyn. He had pleaded guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy in June. Trujillo admitted accepting nearly $200,000 in bribes from a company trying to secure sports marketing contracts. Prosecutors said the former general secretary of Guatemala's football federation should serve more than three years in prison and pay $415,000 in restitution. Defense lawyers asked for no prison time for crimes between 2009 and 2016. According to Trujillo's plea agreement, he would not contest any sentence less than four years and nine months in prison. A 52-year-old man, Paul Akpederi, who pleaded guilty to raping his 16-year-old daughter, was, yesterday, arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ikeja. Paul was docked on a one-count charge of unlawful defilement before Magistrate B. O. Osunsanmi. The prosecutor, Inspector Simon Imhonwa, told the court that the defendant has been committing the offence since 2012 in Ikorodu, area of Lagos. According to Imhonwa, the offence is punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.  The defendant, however, pleaded guilty to the charge levelled against him by the Police. The defendant’s lawyer, A. O. Gbadamosi, filed an application to carry out a psychiatric test on the defendant.   Men of the Apo Divisional Police headquarters in Abuja, have arrested a 19-year-old woman for allegedly aborting a seven months only pregnancy. The suspect, Favour Stephen, an indigene of Benue State, was said to have been arrested after an informant called the police to report the incident. The body of Oluseye Adekunle, the man who jumped into the Lagoon around Lekki Toll gate in an attempt to commit suicide on Friday has been found. The body was discovered by a local fisherman early Sunday morning at about 5.00 a.m. floating by the river bank, around Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge. The body was recovered from the lagoon by coordinated effort of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) Marine Police and handed over to the State Environmental Monitoring Unit (SEHMU). The body has since been taken to Lagos Mainland Hospital Mortuary. May his soul rest in peace, Amen.

I thank God for the saving grace. I would have been dead and forgotten by now if not for God, the Almighty Though,  I lost some friends. Anytime I think about it, I shudder. I want to testify to the goodness of the Lord, though of many years back.  It was a fire disaster in Awori that year. I still remember it vividly as if it happened yesterday. I was at home sleeping , not being aware of the incident. I was woken up by these friends in order to join them siphon petrol from the vandalized pipeline. Though, the expedition was tempting. I was tired but I wanted to go with them. For strength, I therefore went for the water anointed in our church in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.  I took some of the water. But instead of being strengthened, it knocked me down terribly. I could not join them.  So, they left me behind as my condition at that time looked cumbersome to them. I was not to be a liability to them, they reasoned. And that was  my saving grace ! The Lord changed the verdict
