3 Signs You're Dehydrated

Shutterstock Ask any fitness expert to list a couple of common workout roadblocks, and dehydration will likely always make the cut. It's a killer! You need water to exercise —you thrive on it—yet so many women spend their days dehydrated. So, what gives? It could be because, when it comes down to it, you may not even know exactly when you're dehydrated. To solve that problem, we asked Greg Justice, an exercise physiologist at AYC Fitness in Kansas City and author of Mind Your Own Fitness , to list the top signs you need to get way more H20 happy: You Have a Headache Unless you're chugging water 24/7, your body is constantly losing fluid. That means you're also losing essential salts like sodium and potassium because those are in the fluids you're losing. Now get this: That salt loss actually changes the chemical makeup of your blood. Your brain, in turn, is super sensitive to that change—and it's that sensitivity that triggers a headache. Make sen...

You're Eating More Trans-Fat Than You Think You Are

By Maggie Fox You’re getting more trans-fat than you think you are in processed foods, a new study shows. Many foods labeled trans-fat-free in fact do contain some of the artery-clogging gunk, a team at the New York health department found. A check of 4,340 top-selling packaged foods shows that 9 percent of them contain partially hydrogenated oils — the chemically hardened oils that are the source of trans-fats. Of of these, 84 percent proclaimed themselves free of trans-fats, with “0 grams." “This labeling is cause for concern because consumers, seeing the 0 g trans-fat on the Nutrition Facts label, are probably unaware that they are consuming trans-fat,” Jenifer Clapp of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and colleagues wrote in their report. Many studies have shown that trans-fats, produced when liquid fats are made to be solid like butter, are as damaging to arteries as saturated fats such as butte...

The Russians Are Coming: Putin's End Game in Ukraine?

It would appear that the proverbial elephant — or perhaps in this case, the bear — in the living room has finally been revealed. The Kremlin may still deny it, but the evidence of a Russian invasion, or at least an incursion, into Ukraine is compelling: NATO spy photos , eye-witness accounts from fleeing Ukrainian soldiers, and even a ranking member of Vladimir Putin’s own human-rights council, all seem to point toward the presence of Russian soldiers — several battalions’ worth and with sophisticated weapons — fighting with the rebels and slowing, if not reversing, the recent Ukrainian military’s momentum on the battlefield. Even Alexander Zakharchenko, the separatist leader of Donetsk, the regional capital, proudly told viewers of Russian state television Thursday that 3,000 to 4,000 Russian soldiers had come to fight in eastern Ukraine, many during their own furloughs. Ukraine president: Russian forces hav...

Michael Brown Shooting

Police in Ferguson, Missouri, did not file an “incident report” on the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Michael Brown because they turned the case over to St. Louis County police almost immediately, the county prosecutor’s office tells NBC News. Critics and news media outlets have questioned why Ferguson police released an incident report from a robbery in which Brown was a suspect, as well as security video showing the robbery, but not the report on the shooting of the unarmed 18-year-old a short time later by Officer Darren Wilson. The reason, according to the office of St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert P. McCulloch, is that it doesn’t exist. The St. Louis County police department presumably did file an incident report, but any such documents will not be made public until a grand jury investigating the officer-involved shooting concludes its investigation, according to officials from the office who briefed NBC News on the case. ...

No extension of voters’ registration – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission, has said it is ‘logistically impossible’ to extend the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration, which ended on Monday. It however said it would give a fair chance to legitimate registrants and would on a date to be announced, set up registration points at its Local Government Area offices where people yet to do so can go to register. This phase of the exercise, which commenced on August 20, 2014, involved the Federal Capital Territory and 11 states namely Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kwara, Anambra, Ebonyi, Ondo, Oyo Delta and Cross River. In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Kayode Idowu, in Abuja on Monday, the commission stated that old tendencies towards irregularity, such as partisans urging people to come out and do multiple registrations, largely accounted for the crowd clusters lingering at registration points set up for the CVR.  It said, “Much as the Commission is eager to en...

1000 Clerics Storm Abuja To Reconcile Jonathan, Obasanjo

This report is according to Vanguard and I find it very amusing. Lol, 1000 clerics?  Ahead of the 2015 general elections in the country, over 1000 Bishops and Pastors from the Pentecostal fold on Sunday stormed the Ecumenical Center Abuja to reconcile President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasajo. The Clerics who came from different parts of the country arrived late on Saturday while some of them from Imo State arrived early hours of Sunday and slept at the park as there were no officials of the organizers of the program. But it was gathered that because of the absence of President Goodluck Jonathan who was away to Germany on a national official duty and that of the former President Obasanjo who was said to have been represented by his pastor the reconciliation prayer meeting could not precede. There were divergent views on the invitation sent to the two leaders as some of the pastors claimed both President Jonathan and former President Obasanjo ...

Botswana to pay for all inmates' HIV drugs

TVC NEWS [BOTSWANA]- Botswana's High Court has ordered the government to provide treatment to HIV-positive foreign prisoners at the state's expense. The high court Judge, Justice Bengbame Sechele ruled on Friday that the denial of anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment to foreign inmates violated their rights. Dickson Tapela and Mbuso Piye, two Zimbabwean prisoners had sued the government for refusing to provide them with free ARVs, while providing them at no cost to Botswana citizens. The prisoners said the government had denied them "the right to life" and that they deserved "freedom from inhuman and degrading treatment, discrimination, and inequality". Sechele said the government's decision to exclude Tapela and Piye as well as other inmates from ARV was "irrational and invalid". The judge also ruled that the government should pay for the legal fee for the two inmates. The Botswana Network on Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS (BONELA) had suppo...

No Govt Funding Of Political Parties

The clamour by political parties for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take over the funding of their activities may have to wait until the constitution is amended. INEC chairman Professor Attahiru Jega said this much in a recent interaction with the media. He made it clear that the issue of funding political parties is a constitutional matter. Sections 225, 226 and 227 are clearly silent on that. He insisted that, until the National Assembly amends the Nigerian constitution to allow for funding of political parties, INEC would not be able to do anything about it. Those pressurising INEC to fund the parties may be drawing from experiences in other countries such as the United States of America from where Nigeria borrowed its brand of democracy. In those countries, there is discipline as individuals and groups form parties based on very strong ideological framework and they go all out to talk to people and organisations who share their beliefs a...

Is Shapewear Damaging Your Organs?

Most people rarely think about the health effects of their clothes. Including what they are wearing underneath their clothes. Despite their extreme popularity, experts are warning that shapewear can actually hurt your health. What Damage Can Shapewear Do? It can hurt your stomach.  Because shapewear can only work if it’s tight, it can severely compress your stomach, intestines and colon compressed, which experts say can worsen acid reflux and heartburn. According to gastroenterologist Dr. John Kuemmerle, restrictive clothing can also provoke erosive esophagitis. It can hurt your digestive tract.  Your digestive tract is also affected, explains Dr. Karen Erickson, a chiropractor. The intestines are supposed to contract and move food along, but when they’re compressed over a long period of time, the flow of digestion is stifled. “It’s like when people eat a huge meal and then unbuckle their jeans,” Dr. Kuemmerle says. This damage, though not permanent,...

Kenyan MP seeks to block Kenya's nuclear energy plans

TVC NEWS, KENYA - Emuhaya MP Wilbur Ottichilo has filed a motion in Parliament seeking to stop the government from investing in the development of nuclear energy. Mr Ottichilo is arguing that the venture is too expensive and highly risky. The MP wants funds going into establishing the Kenya Nuclear Electricity Board and constructing a plant to be used instead on developing renewable or green energy. “The construction and maintenance of a nuclear plant is a highly technical, expensive and risky undertaking that potentially exposes a country to the threat of nuclear radiation and the challenge of disposal of radioactive nuclear waste,” Mr Ottichilo says. He says due to inherent risks in nuclear energy production, developed countries such as Germany, India, Japan and South Africa are shutting down their plants. “Rather than develop a risky source of power, its better to invest in wind and solar energy, which are safe,” he said. If MPs approve the motion, this would put pressure...

Why are some people able to write with both hands?

For most people, the brain’s left or right side is dominant. The left side of the brain controls movement on the right side of the body, while the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body. As a result, people whose brain is dominated by the left side write with their right hands and vice versa. People with equally strong left and right brains are called ‘ambidextrous’. Those people-about I in 100 can do things like write, use scissors, and throw balls with both hands.

Ebola Outbreak Traced To Toddler’s Contact With Infected Fruit Bat

The largest-ever outbreak of Ebola was triggered by a toddler’s chance contact with a single infected bat, a team of international researchers have concluded after a major investigation of the origins of the deadly disease now ravaging Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Nigeria. A group of 17 European and African tropical disease researchers, ecologists and anthropologists spent three weeks talking to people and capturing bats and other animals near the village of Meliandoua in remote eastern Guinea, where the present epidemic surfaced in December 2013. They discovered that the disease was passed from colony to colony of migratory fruit bats until it reached Guinea. Their research is expected to be published in a major journal in the next few weeks. Early studies suggested that a new strain of Ebola had emerged in west Africa but, according to epidemiologist Fabian Leendertz, it is likely the virus in Guinea is closely related to the one known as Zaire ebolavirus, i...
